The wetlands team from National Great Rivers travelled across the Mississippi River to the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area to meet up with John Vogel, a Natural History Biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation. Dr. Paige Mettler-Cherry is a scientist with National Great Rivers who has worked with MDC to help conserve Boltonia decurrens, a federally listed threatened species, at Columbia Bottom. The meet up marked the start of exciting research funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to document how a levee setback project at Columbia Bottom impacts Boltonia decurrens. Stay tuned to learn more about this very important project, for now enjoy these photos!

The importance of long-term monitoring in the making! This week, our treefrog team caught and released more treefrogs at one specific site than at that location in the past three years combined. We're now seeing our target species, the state-threatened Bird-voiced Treefrog, for the first time at this location! Huge thanks to Save the Frogs for their Amphibian Conservation Grant, enabling us to continue to gather crucial data on Bird-voiced Treefrog populations and the impact of restoration efforts in southern Illinois cypress swamps.

Are you looking for fun, engaging experiences for your middle schooler this summer? Camp Waterschool is excited to have a new camp for middle schoolers this year, Water + Art! This camp is designed to combine art and science for a true STEAM experience. The week will provide opportunities for campers to combine science, art, and the outdoors. Campers will canoe, sketch, paint, run a field experiment, and engage in stewardship activities to keep our river healthy. By reflecting on their personal experiences with the river, campers will better understand the power of STEAM. If you have a middle schooler aged 12-14 and would like more information about this opportunity, please feel free to message us or visit our website at: https://lnkd.in/efTYdBNe #swarovskifoundation #campwaterschool #SFwaterschool #sdg6 #summercamp #STEAMeducation #STEM

This week is... drumroll please.... TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK! One of NGRREC's three main pillars is Education. We value our educators at every level. Thanks to the Swarvoski Foundation, we are able to provide Waterschool water curriculum and activities to teachers across the state of Illinois and Missouri! This school year, twenty-nine schools in five counties have a Waterschool-trained educator. More than 1500 students engaged with Waterschool programming. We distributed water curriculum kits to 40 teachers, and held a Water Festival for more than 900 fifth graders. If you want to learn more, email us at ngrreceducation@lc.edu!#Waterschool #SwarovskiFoundation #EnvironmentalEducation #waterfestival #teacherappreciationweek

Froggy Friday! It has been a busy month here at NGRREC.🔹 Last week Assistant Scientist, Jessica Mohlman, and Research Specialists, Jen Hemphill and Chris Sedivy, opened up ✨500 treefrog traps✨ across southern Illinois to begin our 4th field season on our research of the state-threatened Bird-voiced Treefrog. This year, we will be continuing to gather population information on Bird-voiced Treefrogs, Green Treefrogs, and Gray Treefrogs, along with gathering habitat information on vegetation and water quality in the beautiful cypress swamps of southern Illinois. We will begin sampling for the frogs in the next two weeks! For more information on this project, view our short documentary here➡️https://lnkd.in/g9Gjha2r🔹 NGRREC Intern, Grace Cook, has continued to monitor our newly hatched Wood Frog tadpoles as we await their metamorphosis to adulthood as part of her research on the effects of road salt and leaf litter on their growth and survival. As Wood Frogs are one of the northern-most frog species, their breeding and growth period overlap with snow melt and when we see road salt leach into bodies of water near roadways.#ngrrec #BirdVoicedTreeFrog #Frogs
